MEDFORD — It was a new day for the Roseburg Docs at the Coach K Memorial Tournament in Medford on Saturday, but they were still plagued by the same issues in a pair of losses.

The Docs (4-3) committed seven errors over two games and continued to put themselves in holes they couldn’t dig out of.

Eugene (8-3) broke a tie game with a three-run eighth inning to pull off a 6-3 win over the Docs in an early afternoon game. Roseburg then fell to Springfield in a 14-12 slugfest.

“I think the bats were there and our pitchers were good,” said Jace Stoffal. “They pitched good in crunch time when we needed them. We just had some errors in the field, I had some errors, we just got to clean those up and we’ll save a lot of runs that way.”

Roseburg’s first game Saturday was a pitcher’s duel to start. Docs’ starter Drake Borschowa and Challengers starter Jason Proudfit each allowed just one run over the first five innings.

Roseburg scored a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out single by Jett Black. Eugene tied the score with a run in the fourth.

The Challengers built a 3-1 lead with runs in the sixth and seventh against Docs’ reliever Ever Lamm, but Roseburg tied the game again with two runs in the seventh on a Spencer Six single.

The difference came in the eighth inning when a pair of errors and a wild pitch allowed the Challengers to take the lead for good.

The Docs regrouped and got out of the gates fast with four runs in the first inning of their second game against the Springfield Timbers.

The quick start was needed as the teams traded runs back-and-forth throughout the eight-inning game that was called due to the 2.5 hour time limit.

Springfield put up five runs in the bottom of the first against Docs’ starter Austin Anderson and the game was tied 8-8 after three innings of play.

The Timbers took the lead for good in the fifth, taking advantage of another two errors by the Docs.

“We just need to be in it for the nine innings in the long games and not taking a check out and checking back in,” said Stofall, who finished game two with four hits to highlight the Docs’ offense that notched 16 hits.

Roseburg will finish out its time at the Coach K Memorial Tournament on Sunday against the Grants Pass Nuggets at 4 p.m. Stoffal says it’s important the team snaps their three-game slide.

“It would feel great to get out of here with a win. Obviously, we’ve been struggling in the field with some errors, so we’ve got to clean that up. Our pitchers need to keep pitching good and our bats need to keep coming alive and just clean everything up and we’ll be out of here with a win.”

Sunday’s game can be heard on Roseburg sports radio station The Score 92.3 FM and 1490 AM or watch live on 541radio.com.
