WILSONVILLE — The Oregon School Activities Association is trying to put a silver lining on the canceled winter sports championships that were scheduled in March.
The governing body for high school sports in Oregon has handed out trophies to boys and girls basketball teams that were still vying for state championships in the class 4A, 5A and 6A tournaments when they were canceled March 12 due to public health concerns.
The OSAA has awarded “Final Four” trophies to teams that reached the semifinals of the 6A girls and 5A boys and girls tournaments, according to a report from Jerry Ulmer at OSAA Today. “Elite Eight” trophies were given to quarter-finalists in the 6A boys and 4A boys and girls tournaments.
The trophies feature blue metal, traditionally reserved for state champion
ship trophies. OSAA executive director Peter Weber told Ulmer that the OSAA chose to use blue trophies “because (the teams) were all still alive” for the state title.
The trophies were shipped to schools along with a 20-second congratulatory message from Tory McVay of OnPoint Community Credit Union, title sponsor of the OSAA championship tournaments.
