CORVALLIS — Oregon State University has announced plans to help keep the athletic department above water during these financially difficult times.
OSU athletic director Scott Barnes sent an email to ticket holders to announce pay cuts for himself, football coach Jonathan Smith and men’s basketball coach Wayne Tinkle, according to a report from Oregonlive.com.
All three will reportedly donate 7% of their salaries over the next year back to the OSU Foundation to directly help cover the revenue shortfalls due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Additionally, athletic executives, other select staff members and all other head coaches at OSU will donate up to 5% of their annual salary for next year.
Barnes also announced a hiring freeze in the athletic department.
College athletic departments are scrambling to cover costs after shortfalls in revenue sharing from the NCAA. The cancellation of the men’s basketball tournament and the spring sports championships are costing universities at the Division-I level thousands and a number of programs have already announced pay cuts for coaches and other steps to save money.
