WILSONVILLE — It wasn’t the news anyone was hoping for, but it was the news that most were expecting.

With Gov. Kate Brown’s announcement Thursday that schools in Oregon will not re-open for in-person classes this academic year, the Oregon Schools Activities Association has followed suit and shutdown high school sports for the spring season.

“Today’s heart-wrenching decision is difficult for all members of the OSAA family,” said OSAA Executive Director Peter Weber in a press release. “We empathize with students and school communities, especially our graduating seniors, but recognize that these cancellations will allow our collective focus to remain where it’s most needed at this time – on the health and safety of all Oregonians.”

The OSAA had previously decided to postpone the start of the spring season through April 28th, following school closure mandates from the governor. The organization had hoped for an abbreviated sports season, but with schools and athletic facilities closed to students for the rest of the school year, there was no choice.

“Now more than ever we need to apply the lessons learned through participation in education-based activities – teamwork, sacrifice, and resilience – and play our role in adhering to the public health guidelines,” Weber said. “We all look forward to the day we will play again.”

The OSAA Executive Board will meet in the coming weeks, according to the release, to discuss policies for summer activities, along with academic eligibility concerns for the fall of 2020.
