The Oregon School Activities Association has extended its suspension of high school spring sports and activities to April 28, the organization announced Tuesday

The decision falls in line with Gov. Kate Brown’s recent school closure mandate. With students and staff barred from high school campuses and facilities, teams will not be allowed to practice or compete before the end of April.

The extension means that baseball, softball, track and field, tennis, golf and lacrosse will all be on hiatus until near the end of their regular seasons. Cutoff dates for postseason qualifying begin as early as May 12 for some sports.

The suspension also applies to OSAA sanctioned activities such as band, orchestra, choir, solo music and speech.

In their announcement, the OSAA did reveal that it has made the decision to cancel the solo music and speech state championship events due to lack of qualifying events prior to the school shutdowns and the timing of their respective state championship events.

The championships will not be rescheduled.

Another development from the executive board meeting was a new location for the track and field state championships. The meet was scheduled to return to Hayward Field in Eugene after a one year hiatus.

The University of Oregon began construction on a complete renovation of Hayward Field in 2018, but work on the new facility will not be done in time for the OSAA’s deadlines.

The Class 6A, 5A and 4A meet will now be hosted at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham and the 3A, 2A, 1A events at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. Both meets, if not canceled, will currently be held on May 29-30.

As policies regarding public health and the coronavirus continue to evolve, the OSAA executive board will re-evaluate its guidelines on April 1 and again on April 15.
