WILSONVILLE — The Oregon School Activities Association announced Friday that it was suspending practices and competitions for high school spring sports teams through March 31. The decision mirrored Gov. Kate Brown’s decision to close public K-12 schools March 16-31.
The suspension will affect all schools in Douglas County. Baseball, softball, track and field, golf, lacrosse and tennis were scheduled to begin competing on or after Monday, March 16.
“This is unprecedented,” said Roseburg High athletics director Russ Bolin. “ We have to make the best of it and go forward.”
Prior to the OSAA’s announcement, Roseburg Public Schools had announced that it was canceling competitions through April 10. Bolin said Roseburg High will continue to suspend competitions into April, despite the OSAA’s mandate only lasting through March.
“Our district office worked with the state departments and thought this was the best plan going forward,” Bolin said.
If activities are allowed in April, teams will approximately be at the midway point of the season.
