WINCHESTER — The winning streaks just keep on rolling for the Umpqua Community College basketball teams after the RiverHawks swept the visiting Lane Titans on Wednesday.
The No. 1 UCC women toppled the No. 3 Lane Titans 74-68.
The RiverHawks only trailed Lane once in the game, an early 2-0 deficit in the first two minutes. Yet the Titans battled until the very end.
After falling behind by 14 points in the final quarter, Lane fought its way back to get within four points in the final minute.
Umpqua’s Cielo Gonzales helped secure the win by going 13 for 18 from the free throw line in the fourth period. The sophomore had a game-high 26 points and added seven assists for the RiverHawks.
Darian Mitchell added 16 points and 11 rebounds for UCC. Kalina Rojas led Lane with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Umpqua women are now 23-0 and 10-0 in the South Region. The first place RiverHawks continue to hold a two-game lead over Clackamas for the South Region championship.
As for the No. 3 ranked Umpqua men, Brock Gilbert had his first career triple-double and led the way to a 96-77 victory for the RiverHawks. UCC’s win streak is now up to five.
Umpqua never trailed in the contest and pulled ahead by as many as 29 points early in the second half.
Gilbert had a team-high 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Isaac Lungren also had 19 points for UCC.
Isaac Lange led Lane with 26 points.
The Umpqua men (21-2, 9-1 South) remain tied with Clackamas for first place in the South Region.
