SALEM — The Umpqua Community College basketball teams swept a South Region series with the Chemeketa Storm on Monday, setting up a primetime showdown with Clackamas this weekend.
The top-ranked Umpqua women improved to 19-0 on the year with a dominating 79-57 victory over the Chemeketa Storm. Cielo Gonzalez led the RiverHawks with 26 points, 6 assists and 3 steals. Darian Mitchell and Grace Campbell each had double-doubles.
The UCC women now have a 1.5 game lead over Clackamas for first place in the South Region.
The Umpqua men torched Chemeketa 104-75 on Monday behind big games from Kolten Mortensen and Brock Gilbert. Mortensen led the way with 23 points and 7 rebounds. Gilbert made three 3-pointers and finished with 20 points, while also dishing out 15 assists.
The Umpqua men have stayed just a half-game behind Clackamas for the South Region lead.
The UCC RiverHawks will get back to action on Saturday for a big showdown at Clackamas. The women can build a sizeable lead for the South Region title, while the men have a shot at moving into a tie with Clackamas for first place.
