EUGENE — The Umpqua Community College men and women saw their hot start to the college basketball season continue in Eugene against Lane Community College Wednesday night.
The women started with a 94-86 win over the Titans and the men finished the sweep with a 91-81 victory.
The UCC women trailed Lane 50-46 at halftime, but Cielo Gonzalez scored 12 of her 15 points in the third period to push the RiverHawks back in front for good. The Titans (12-3, 1-1 South) were outscored 48-36 in the second half as UCC went 10-of-14 from the free throw line to pull away.
Darian Mitchell led Umpqua with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Grace Campbell also stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, 15 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 steals and 2 blocks.
The UCC women improved to 15-0 on the year with the win and 2-0 in the South Region.
The Umpqua men fell behind after a slow start, but a 17-5 run in the first half got the RiverHawks back in the game and they slowly pulled away for the 10-point victory.
Brock Gilbert nearly finished with a triple-double to lead the way for UCC. The sophomore tied for the team-high with 17 points, plus had 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Cody Fredrickson also had 17 for the RiverHawks.
The Umpqua men have now won seven straight and are 14-1 on the year.
Up next for the RiverHawks will be men’s and women’s games at home against Portland on Saturday.
