ROSEBURG – The Roseburg cross country team hosted a number of local teams for the Early Bird Gets The Worm meet at Stewart Park on Wednesday.

Douglas, Glide, North Douglas, Oakland, Reedsport, South Umpqua and Sutherlin all took part in the 12-team competition for both boys and girls racers. Coquille, Hidden Valley, Myrtle Point and Powers rounded out the rest of the teams.

Roseburg sophomore Eliza Eckman blew past the competition to win the girl’s 5K race in a time of 19:35. She crossed the finish line nearly a minute and a half ahead of her teammate Charis Childers, who took second (21:02).

Roseburg had five runners in the top 10 of the final results. Sophia Tate (22:06), Samantha Eichman (22:06) and Miriam Childers (23:04) placed fifth, sixth and tenth respectively. Other local racers in the top 10 were South Umpqua’s Haven Pickup (22:29) in seventh and Sutherlin’s Madison Turner (22:49) in ninth.

In the boy’s 5K, Roseburg’s Nicholas Looper (18:03) was the top local finisher in second place. Oakland’s Wyatt Smith (18:15) finished third and Roseburg sophomore Preston Smith (18:16) took fourth.

Also in the top 10 were Glide freshman Thomas Hatcher (18:36) in sixth, Dale Wells (18:36) from South Umpqua in seventh and Roseburg’s Brian Powell (18:57) at No. 10.
