ROSEBURG — The run came to an end on Tuesday for the Pepsi Bottlecaps at the Class A American Legion state tournament at Legion Field. A five-run first inning put the North Coos Waterfront ahead early on and Pepsi never managed to overcome the deficit in a 13-8 loss to end the season.

Pepsi fought all the way through despite falling behind 13-2 going to the bottom of the fifth inning. Facing a mercy rule loss to North Coos, the Bottlecaps mustered up four runs in the fifth to keep the game going and their hopes of a comeback alive.

The Bottlecaps added two more runs in the sixth, but came up empty in the seventh. Their hopes of extending their season to the final day of the tournament were hampered by six errors.

Dakota Purcell went 2-for-3 in the game and drove in three runs, while Jericho Paul also drove in three runs, despite going 0-for-4. Caden Smith also added a pair of hits and a pair of walks for the Bottlecaps.

Pepsi finished its season 15-16 overall and went 2-2 in the state tournament.

North Coos, the defending state champs, will move on to face Alpenrose Dairy in the championship round. Alpenrose Dairy was able to advance to the championship round by defeating La Grande, 5-3. The Red Sox would need to defeat North Coos twice in order to take the state title.

Game one of championship Wednesday gets underway at 10 a.m. If needed, a second game would be played around 1 p.m.

Both teams have already secured their spots as the Oregon state representatives for the Class A Northwest Regional being played in Cody, Wyoming.
