SPRINGFIELD — The Dr. Stewart’s American Legion baseball team had a roller-coaster kind of night against the first place Willamette Valley Titans on Tuesday in Springfield.

The Titans blasted the Docs 10-0 in five innings in the opener of a league doubleheader, but Drake Borschowa pitched a gem in the nightcap to help the Stewies battle back for a 6-1 win and a split in the series.

The Docs (15-9; 6-6 Area 4) managed just four hits in the opener against Titans’ starter Walker Wonham and were shutout for the first time this season. Meanwhile, Willamette Valley piled up 15 hits against the Docs and capped the 10-run rule victory with a three-run homer by Cade Crist in the fifth inning to end the game early.

The loss was the Docs third-in-a-row, but the team put the lopsided defeat behind them and backed-up Borschowa’s stellar start in game two.

The soon-to-be senior at Riddle High School was two outs away from throwing a no-hitter against the Titans and had faced the minimum as he started the seventh inning. Borschowa had allowed just one base runner through the first six frames. Bryce Boettcher reached base on an error in the fourth inning, but a double-play cleared the bases and Borschowa got a ground-out to end the inning facing only three batters.

Zach Hart broke up Borschowa’s no-no bid with a single to right field in the seventh. The Titans (16-8-1; 8-2) managed to rally and score one run in the final inning, but the Docs survived with their six-run lead.

Jonathan Stone went 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBI to lead the Docs offense in game two. Jace Stoffal and Luke Van Norman also had RBI for the Docs, while Caden and Cody Johnson each finished with two hits.

Dr. Stewart’s remains in a tie with Grants Pass for third place in the Area 4 standings, while Willamette hangs on to a one-game lead over Eugene for first place.

Up next, the Docs will head to Corvallis for the Mickey Riley Star Spangled Tournament starting on Thursday. The tournament runs through Sunday. Dr. Stewart’s will square off with the Eastside Cutters at 1 p.m. Thursday in its first game of the tourney.
