COEUR D’ALENE, ID – The Umpqua men’s wrestling team had three wrestlers reach the championship bout at the NJCAA Western Regional in Idaho on Sunday and the RiverHawks finished with five wrestlers qualified for the Junior College National Championship tournament coming March 1st in Iowa.
Nathan Kiddo (125), Sawyer Myers (141) and Adam Lamb (285) all reached their respective title bouts, but fell short of winning individual championships. All three lost by fall in the finals, but still qualified for the national tournament. Garrett Russell (149) and Braydon Wright (157) both finished third at the regional qualifier. Russell won by a 3-2 decision and Wright pinned his opponent in 3:41.
The five wrestlers will now gear up for the National Championship tournament held in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The Umpqua women’s wrestling team finished out its season at the WCWA National Championship tournament in Georgia over the weekend. The UCC women won four matches total between the three wrestlers that qualified for the tournament. Mariah Annis (116) lost her first match, but went on to win three straight in the consolation round before getting eliminated. Esthela Trevino (109) won her first match of the competition, but lost her final two. Jordyn White (123) went two-and-out at the tournament.
This was the first time ever that Umpqua Community College qualified for the national championships.
