MEDFORD – When it comes to Southwest Conference play, you can throw out the record books. The first place Roseburg boys succumbed to the defensive pressure of last place South Medford on Friday night and suffered a 60-46 loss for their first defeat in conference play.

“Anybody can beat you,” Roseburg head coach Mike Pardon said after loss. “This is 6A basketball. Everybody has got good athletes. Everyone is going to come to play.”

Roseburg (12-5; 2-1 SWC) looked like it could be headed towards a big win in the first quarter. Carson Ellis scored the first seven points of the game for the Tribe and Roseburg led South Medford by eight after the first period.

South Medford (2-15; 1-2 SWC) turned up the defensive pressure in the second period and held Roseburg scoreless for more than four minutes of game play. The Panthers went on an 8-0 and cut the deficit down to one by halftime.

The comeback continued early in the third quarter for South Medford. Sophomore Jude Pannell hit a lay-in only 20 seconds into the second half to give the Panthers their first lead of the game. Roseburg battled back and briefly took a 31-30 lead midway through the third on a pair of Collin Warmouth free throws, but South Medford responded with a 13-6 run to finish the quarter.

The Panthers continued to pull away in the fourth quarter and made 10-of-12 free throws to earn their second win of the year.

“You’ve got to come ready to play,” added Pardon. “I just don’t think we came out with the same energy we that we came out with the two previous nights. We’ve got to come out with better energy.”

Warmouth scored a game-high 26 points. Ellis added nine points for the Tribe.

Pannell scored a season-high 19 points for the Panthers. South Medford also got 10 points apiece from Ben Harmon and Keegan Losinski.
