REDMOND – The top-ranked Roseburg wrestling team came up short against No. 2 Newberg in the finals of the Oregon Classic in Redmond on Saturday. The championship dual came down to the final match. Newberg’s Connor O’Bryan defeated Hunter Blix 6-4 giving the Tigers a 32-31 win over Roseburg.
The Indians fell behind 19-3 but reeled off five straight wins to pull ahead. Newberg battled back by winning the final three matches.
Tristan David, Darian Thacker, and Rourke Martin all won by fall for Roseburg in the finals. The Indians also received wins from Kahleb Diaz (Dec 10-6), Archer Bergeron (Dec 4-3), Austin David (Dec 6-2) and Logan Folsom (Maj 13-4).
Roseburg reached the finals after defeating Mountain View 47-19 in the semifinals and Tualatin 61-12 in the quarterfinals. The Indians defeated Sandy, Bend and Oregon City in the opening round robin pool play.
Up next, the Roseburg wrestling team will visit North Medford for a conference dual on Wednesday.
The Glide wrestling team was also in Redmond for the Oregon Classic and finished second in the 2A/1A tournament. The Wildcats fell to Culver in the championship dual, 54-24. Gabe Syverson, Zach Holland, Cayden Kangiser, and Zack Welker all won in the finals for Glide.
Reedsport finished third in the 2A/1A tournament. The Douglas/Camas Valley team took second in the 3A consolation bracket, while South Umpqua took 8th.
