COOS BAY – The Umpqua men’s and women’s basketball teams took two league games against Southwestern Oregon Wednesday night in Coos Bay.
The UCC men stayed undefeated in league play with a 96-83 victory over the Lakers. It was the sixth straight win for the RiverHawks, who moved into first place in the South Region standings.
Umpqua (11-6; 4-0 NWAC South) used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to build a 20-point advantage, but SWOCC (11-6; 4-0 NWAC South) rallied back to within seven by halftime. The Lakers went on an 18-7 run over the first five minutes of the second half and took their first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Moses Miller.
The two sides traded the lead back-and-forth, but UCC took the lead for good on an Eric Klekas lay-in with 5:23 left to play. Klekas finished with a game-high 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting. The sophomore drained six three-pointers. Cameron Benzel came off the bench to provide a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the RiverHawks.
The Umpqua women (14-3; 3-1 NWAC South) won their third straight game with an 84-50 victory. Southwestern Oregon (5-11; 0-5 NWAC South) started the game with a three-point lead after the first quarter, but UCC went on to outscore the Lakers 51-21 over the next two periods.
Taylor Stricklin made nine three-pointers and scored a game-high 31 points for the RiverHawks. Three other players finished in double-digits for UCC.
Up next for Umpqua basketball will be a series against Clark College from Vancouver, Washington on Saturday. The women will tipoff first at 2 p.m. and the men’s game will follow.
