The Oakland girls basketball team is out to a 10-1 start this year and they came in ranked No. 3 in the latest OSAA 2A coaches poll. As they get ready to begin Central Valley Conference play, head coach Don Witten was a guest on Off The Wall on Friday, January 4.
Coach Witten talks about the hot start the Oakers have had so far and what he expects to see in a very tough conference season. He thinks the Oakland girls will compete with Monroe and Central Linn for the top spot in the conference and says that his team has bought into a defensive mentality. “The kids know that they have to defend if they’re going to have any chance to win. And they’ve bought into that and that’s been really rewarding to see.”
Coach Witten also discusses the leadership he’s seen from three seniors that are four year starters. He describes how the team has been built around the talents of Hadley Brooksby, Grace Witten, and Cassidy Jones.
