SANTA CLARA, CA – It may not have been pretty, but the Oregon football team finished out the 2018 season with a win.

Oregon struggled offensively most of the game, but an early fourth quarter score was just enough to give the Ducks a 7-6 win over Michigan State in the Redbox Bowl on Monday.

Justin Herbert hit Dillon Mitchell for a 28-yard touchdown with 11:24 left to play for Oregon’s only score of the game. It was the longest play from scrimmage for the Ducks.

Michigan State took a 6-0 lead with a pair of field goals in the third quarter, but the Spartans missed two 50-yard field goal attempts in the fourth quarter after the Ducks took the lead.

The win snapped a three-game bowl losing streak for the Ducks, who last won in the postseason at the 2015 Rose Bowl.

Herbert finished the game 18-of-32 passing for 165 yards and the one score. Dillon Mitchell was named the offensive player of the game with 70 receiving yards and the touchdown. Oregon mustered only 37 rushing yards against Michigan State’s top-ranked run defense.

Both offenses struggled throughout the game. Michigan State managed 328 total yards and had one turnover. Oregon finished with a season-low 201 yards of offense, but didn’t turn the ball over. The teams combined for 18 punts.

Oregon will head into the offseason looking to build off its first nine-win season since 2015. Justin Herbert has announced he’ll return for his senior season and the offense will have almost all of its starters back next year. The Ducks are still waiting on a decision by wide receiver Dillon Mitchell and linebacker Troy Dye, who are both eligible to leave early for the NFL draft.

The Ducks are also brining in a top 10 recruiting class for next year to help bolster the roster. And head coach Mario Cristobal affirmed his commitment to the program after rumors started that he was a top candidate for the vacant head coaching position at his alma mater, the University of Miami.

Oregon will begin the 2019 season with a marquee match-up against the Auburn Tigers at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on August 31.
