EAGLE POINT, ORE. – The Roseburg boys basketball team overcame a slow start in its season opener against Eagle Point and ran away with a 75-53 win over the Eagles on Wednesday night at Eagle Point High School.
The 5A Eagles started the game perfect from the floor and built a 7-0 lead. Roseburg struggled to find a rhythm early and turned the ball over on its first three possession.
Collin Warmouth finally got Roseburg on the board with a three-point play 90 seconds into the contest, but the Indians trailed Eagle Point for much of the first quarter. Roseburg (1-0) took its first lead with less than two minutes to play on a basket by Xavier Avilez and a three-pointer by Warmouth with just seconds left in the opening period put Roseburg in front for good.
The Indians continued to heat up in the second period and outscored Eagle Point (0-1) by six to take a 38-30 lead into the halftime break. Roseburg extended the lead to as much as 14 points in the third quarter and led by double-digits into the fourth quarter. Eagle Point made a run and got back to within 59-51 around the three minute mark, but Roseburg finished on a 16-2 run to pull away for the win.
Warmouth finished with a game-high 26 points. He made three 3-pointers and went 11-for-13 from the free throw line. Carson Ellis came off the bench to score 14 points and Jonathan Stone added 10.
Juniors Tre McGarrell and Quinton Gelbrich each scored 14 points to lead Eagle Point before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
