NOV. 20, 2018 – The Umpqua men’s basketball team wrapped-up its season-opening trip to Utah with a blowout win over Rexburg United from Idaho on Monday. The RiverHawks earned their first win of the year with a 105-66 victory.

Connor Shaw, a native of North Ogden, Utah, scored a team-high 24 points to lead Umpqua in the win. The sophomore was one of six players in double figures for UCC.

The RiverHawks make their way home on Tuesday and will take some time for the holidays and then get back to action with a non-conference game at home against the University of Oregon men’s club team on Friday, November 30. That will kickoff a three-game home stand for the RiverHawks.

Meanwhile, the Umpqua women’s basketball team opens up the 2018-19 campaign at home Tuesday night against Shasta College. The UCC ladies were the South Region champs last year and finished runner-up in the Northwest Athletic Conference tournament, but only sophomore Taylor Stricklin returns from that roster.

Stricklin, a Sutherlin graduate and daughter of head coach Dave Stricklin, will lead a group of freshman as the RiverHawks try to reach the post season again.

There are three Umpqua Basin players on the team, including Stricklin. Redshirt freshman Darian Mitchell is joined by fellow Douglas Trojan Lainey Rincon, a 2018 Douglas High School graduate.

All told, nine of the 11 women on the roster are from the state of Oregon.

Tuesday’s season opener against Shasta College tips off at 5:30 p.m. The Umpqua women are not scheduled to return home to the UCC campus for a game until a conference game against Linn-Benton on January 9.
