NOV. 5, 2018 – The fall sports season is starting to wrap-up and history was made for the South Umpqua volleyball team on Saturday at the 3A state volleyball playoffs.

The Lancers earned the school’s first volleyball trophy with a three-set sweep over No. 5 Blanchet Catholic (25-17, 25-18, 25-20).

Shalyn Gray had 19 digs and 12 kills in the third place match for South Umpqua and Sydnie Johnson contributed 12 digs and 26 assists for the Lancers. Gray and Johnson were selected to the all-tournament first team and Jenna Whitmore, who had 10 digs, nine kills, and three blocks in Saturday’s match, made second-team all-tournament.

In other volleyball state playoff matches, North Douglas, Days Creek, and Glide all ended the season with losses on Saturday. Despite the defeat, North Douglas still claimed a trophy. The Warriors lost 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20) to Hosanna Christian in the third place game to finish fifth in the state. Days Creek and Glide both lost in consolation semifinal matches.

In the high school football playoffs over the weekend, only two Umpqua Basin teams have survived to the next round. Glide and Camas Valley both advanced to the quarterfinals with wins.

The Glide Wildcats pulled off a 48-42 overtime upset against Knappa on Friday. Running back Zach Holland rushed for 244 yards and scored six times, including the game-winner in overtime. Holland caught one of two touchdown passes from Caidyn Cunningham and scored from 22-yards out to give the Wildcats the win.

Glide moves on to face Santiam in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Camas Valley was the lone local team to receive a home playoff game in the first round and the Hornets protected their home field with a 40-12 victory over Elkton.

Bryson Wolfe led the way for Camas Valley, scoring five rushing touchdowns and throwing for another.

Camas Valley now faces three-time defending state champion Dufur in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
