MEDFORD – A quick start for St. Mary’s ended any thoughts of an upset for the Douglas girls soccer team in the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday. The Crusaders scored three goals in the first 10 minutes on the way to a 5-0 victory against the Trojans.

Douglas, the 15-seed in the 3A/2A/1A state tournament, lacked the defensive pressure to hold off 2-seed St. Mary’s. The Crusaders out-shot the Trojans 25-2.

St. Mary’s moves on to the quarterfinals to face Riverside Saturday. Douglas ends the season with an overall record of 8-5-2.

In the boy’s soccer playoffs, a first half goal was all that was needed for Santiam Christian as the Eagles defeated Umpqua Valley Christian 1-0 in the first round of the 3A/2A/1A state playoffs on Tuesday.

Santiam Christian, the eight seed, knocked in the game-winning goal in the 36th minute and held off the Monarchs the rest of the way. It was just the third loss of the season for ninth-seed UVC.

Santiam Christian moves on to face top-seed Oregon Episcopal on Saturday. Umpqua Valley Christian ends the year with a record of 10-3-1.
