TUALATIN, ORE. – The pursuit of a blue state championship trophy got underway on Wednesday for a number of volleyball teams as the 6A and 1A state playoffs began.
The Roseburg volleyball team traveled to Tualatin and struck early, but saw its season come to an end with a four-set loss to the Timberwolves in the first round.
Roseburg challenged Tualatin early on by bursting out of the gate to win the opening set 25-16. The Timberwolves steadied themselves and took the second set 25-16 to even the match. Tualatin then rolled to a 25-12 win in the third set and eliminated Roseburg from the post season with a 25-18 win in the final set.
The Indians reached the post season under first year coach Doug Magee and finished tied for second in the Southwest Conference. Magee will graduate six seniors from this year’s team, but saw plenty of younger players get extensive minutes on the court.
Tualatin advances to the second round of the state playoffs to face Central Catholic on Saturday.
The North Douglas volleyball team advanced to the second round of the 1A state playoffs with a sweep against Rogue Valley Adventist Academy. The Warriors cruised past the Red Tail Hawks, taking the three sets by scores of 25-6, 25-14, and 25-14.
The Umpqua Valley Christian volleyball team came up short of an upset and finished the season with a four-set loss at Alsea in the first round. The set scores were 25-20, 13-25, 25-11, 25-23.
The 1A state playoffs continue with the second round on Saturday. North Douglas will host Adrian and Days Creek welcomes in Alsea after having a first round bye.
