BEND – The Roseburg football team fell behind Bend early in the second half and couldn’t catch the Lava Bears in a 40-20 loss Friday night at Bend High School. The Indians held leads twice in the first half, but a trick play near the end of the second quarter put Bend in front for good. Bend quarterback Cooper Simmonds passed to tight end Luke Musgrave behind the line of scrimmage and Musgrave found Cole Parker wide open downfield for the 28-yard double-pass touchdown. The Lava Bears held a 19-14 advantage at the break.

Roseburg’s Collin Warmouth found D’Angelo Adams for a 62-yard touchdown in the first quarter and the PAT by Merhawi Lake put the Indians ahead 7-6. Warmouth connected with Payton Bryant in the second quarter for a 23-yard score that put Roseburg in front 14-13 with 1:06 before the break, but the Lava Bears had enough time for one more score before heading to the locker room.

Bend (3-1) scored twice in the third quarter to take a 33-14 lead, but Roseburg struck back with its own trick play. A pitch to running back Doran Gillespie drew the defense up and the junior fired a pass downfield to Kole Bare to convert a 66-yard touchdown. That got the Indians back within 13-points, but that’s as close as they’d get.

Roseburg (1-3) begins Southwest Conference play with a home game against Grants Pass on Friday night.
