ROSEBURG – The Umpqua RiverHawks volleyball team went toe-to-toe with the New Hope Deacons on Tuesday and pulled off a 3-2 victory. It was the first time this year that the RiverHawks have won in back-to-back matches and it was the RiverHawks’ first game in their home gym.

The first four sets were all decided by five points or less and the first two were separated by only two points (25-23, 26-28, 25-22, 20-25, 7-15).

In the fifth and final set – played to only 15 points – Umpqua got out to a hot start that New Hope couldn’t overcome. The RiverHawks went on an 8-0 run to build a 10-2 advantage in the match. UCC held the Deacons off down the stretch and won 15-7 on a service error by New Hope.

Madison Becker had 42 assists in the match, leading to 16 kills from Amiyah Shakoor and another 14 kills from Emma Lind. Kyleigh Scott led UCC with 31 digs.

Up next for UCC is the start of conference matches. On Friday, the RiverHawks will face Clark College on the road.
