ROSEBURG – By the end of four quarters of high school football on Friday night, the Roseburg Indians finally got to celebrate a moment they had waited two weeks for. The Tribe finally got to play their home opener on the newly installed turf at Finlay Field and they finally got their first win of the year.

Roseburg’s home opener was delayed by two weeks due to a lengthy delay in the turf installation process. The Indians had also struggled offensively through the first two weeks of the season, but things turned around in front of the home crowd as Roseburg won 49-38 over Reynolds.

The shootout was marred by numerous penalties by both teams, which slowed down the pace of play. Reynolds took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 1-yard run by quarterback Jaden Hawkinson. Roseburg tied the game just seconds before the first quarter came to an end. Quarterback Collin Warmouth scored his first rushing touchdown of the year on a 3-yard run.

The Tribe started to pull away in the second quarter and built its largest lead of the season with three straight scores. Junior running back Doran Gillespie found the end zone on a 4-yard run to put the Indians in front. He added his second score of the game four minutes later on a 47-yard carry that put Roseburg in front 21-7. Warmouth followed by punching in a 1-yard run for his second score and the Indians led 28-7 with 1:44 left to play before the halftime break.

Reynolds (2-1) managed to strike quickly and scored in just 22 seconds to make the score 28-13 as the teams headed to the locker rooms.

The Raiders committed three turnovers in the first half, leading to 21 points for Roseburg. Hawkinson threw two interceptions and Reynolds fumbled a kickoff return that was stolen away by Roseburg senior Bryson Diaz.

Roseburg (1-2) started the second half with another takeaway. On a fourth down play at the Roseburg 23-yard line, Hawkinson fumbled the ball trying to scramble and Roseburg’s Cayden Gingery snatched it away. The Indians turned that into another touchdown, this time a 14-yard pass from Warmouth to D’Angelo Adams. It was the first passing TD of the season for Warmouth.

Reynolds started to cut into the deficit on its next drive. Hawkinson capped off a nine-play drive with a 1-yard run. The point after kick was blocked by Zack Mandera and the Indians held a 35-19 lead with 3:37 to play in the third quarter.

Both offenses found quick scores before beginning the fourth quarter and Roseburg led 42-25 after three periods.

Reynolds got back to within 11 points after scoring first in the fourth quarter. Miles Wilson broke free for a 19-yard run that made it 42-31. The Raiders forced a Roseburg punt on the next drive and then took the football deep into Roseburg territory.

The Raiders were at the Roseburg 7-yard line with about two minutes to play, but Roseburg’s Kole Bare stepped in front of a Hawkinson pass in the end zone and returned the ball 100-yards for a pick-6. The touchdown sealed the victory for the Indians.

Reynolds added a late score, but it wasn’t enough to retake the lead. The 49 points for Roseburg were the most scored in a single game this season for the Indians and the most allowed by the Raiders in a single game.

Roseburg will continue non-conference play next week with a trip to Bend on Friday night. The Indians will face the Lava Bears at 7 p.m. Follow the action on CBS Sports Radio 1490 The Score or watch online at 541radio.com.
