ROSEBURG – It took until the third game of the season, but the Roseburg volleyball team finally got the monkey off its back. RHS earned its first win under new head coach Doug Magee on Tuesday with a sweep against West Salem.
Roseburg hosted a double-duel with West Salem, Sprague, and North Medford all in attendance. The Tribe lost 3-1 against Sprague to start the day, but then rebounded to win in straight sets against West Salem, 25-22, 25-15, 29-27. West Salem is led by former Roseburg head coach Bruce Myers.
Chay Swenson led the Tribe with 15 kills in the win over the Titans and Alyssa Fox added 14. Junior Rylee Russell had 17 assists for Roseburg and freshman Mallory Malysz contributed 16. Defensively, Karey Lomica made 20 digs.
The RHS girls will have some time away from competition and will next travel to South Eugene for a Southwest Conference contest on Thursday next week.
The Roseburg girls soccer team started the year with a 1-1 tie against Crater on Tuesday. It’s a strong start for a RHS team that is looking to rebuild after a winless season in 2017. Last year, the Indians lost 11 games and tied two, but only scored one goal all season.
Clarah Shaffer scored the goal for Roseburg and gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead. Crater tied the game nine minutes later.
Roseburg has matched its goal scoring from a year ago and remains undefeated. Up next the girls host Eagle Point on Tuesday next week.
