FORTALEZA, BRAZIL – Roseburg’s Austin Harris followed up his Greco-Roman gold medal performance on Friday with a freestyle title on Sunday at the Junior Pan-American Championships in Brazil.
Harris went 3-0 in freestyle competitions to complete an undefeated trip to South America. The former Roseburg High wrestler started out freestyle wrestling with 10-0 technical fall victories against Canadian Richard Deschatelets and Guilherme Lima of Brazilian. He then won gold by pinning Emiliano Guzman of Mexico in 1:42. Harris had fallen behind 4-0 in the match before rallying for the victory.
Harris, a redshirt freshman for Oklahoma State wrestling, was one of four American wrestlers to win gold in both Greco and freestyle. Harris claimed first place at 97 kg in both discipline. Joining Harris as double champions were Dylan Gregerson at 61 kg, Anthony Cassioppi at 125 kg and Cameron Caffey at 92 kg. With the help of Harris, Team USA won both the Greco-Roman and freestyle team championships. Team USA also claimed the women’s freestyle championship.
