ROSEBURG – The Umpqua Community College volleyball team started practices as the beginning of August and will kick off the season on August 25 at the Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball showcase in Springfield.
The Riverhawks are coming off a 13-24 season in 2017 and a second-to-last finish in the South Region. Lacy Pinard is back for another season leading the Riverhawks and will hope to get the team back into the post season. UCC made the conference tournament in 2016 and won a pair of games before getting knocked out on the third day of the tournament.
There will be two new Roseburg natives on the roster for the Riverhawks this year. Kayleigh Scott and Aubrey Snyder, both Roseburg High School graduates, will join the staff. Scott will play at the middle hitter and defensive specialist positions and Snyder will also play at the defensive specialist position. They join sophomores Karsyn Ramsey and Brook West from Roseburg, who will both serve as opposite hitters.
South Umpqua’s Emma Lind returns for her second season with the Riverhawks. Overall, UCC returns four players from last year’s roster. Lind was second on the team in digs (203), behind Kylie Keffer, who returns to the team after recording 311 digs last year and averaging 3.46 digs per set, 17th best in the NWAC. Lind was also the top attacker for the Riverhawks last year with 617 total attacks.
Umpqua starts the year at the Bob Keefer Center for Sports and Recreation in Springfield. The Riverhawks will take part in the two-day conference friendly tournament. All 32 teams from the NWAC will be in attendance and 96 matches will be played, with each team playing six matches total. First up for UCC is Everett.
