BAKER CITY – Glide’s Cyller Cunningham and the East All-Star team won the East-West Shrine game 20-8 on Saturday in Baker City. It’s the fourth straight win for the East team, which holds a 33-30 overall advantage in the series.
Cunningham was the only Douglas County player on the East team. Sutherlin’s Korbyn Jones was an alternate, but wasn’t added to the roster for the game. Cunningham had five carries for just 12 yards, but scored the final touchdown of the game. The East team scored twice in the final 7:30 of the game to comeback from an 8-6 deficit.
The West team had a larger contingent of players from Douglas County. Andrew Harrington and Nic Freeman of Oakland played along with, Taylor Gross, Johnathan Warner and Anthony Rondeau of South Umpqua, Jacob Payne of Camas Valley and Ted Wickman of Yoncalla.
Wickman made an acrobatic catch down the sideline for 29 yards in the first half. It was his only catch of the game. Gross had one carry for the West team and collected 12 yards.
The all-star series features the top graduated seniors from Oregon high schools in the 1A thorugh 4A classifications. On the sidelines for the West team was South Umpqua coach Steve Stebbins. Oakland coach Ben Lane was also selected to help coach the West team, but was unable to attend.
