COOS BAY – The Roseburg Pepsi Bottlecaps came up short in an extra-inning affair against the Hillsboro Sky Sox in the first round of the Class-A American Legion state tournament at Clyde Allen Field.

The ‘Caps and Sox traded the lead back-and-forth over the first seven innings, but a two-run double in the top of the tenth gave Hillsboro a 12-10 lead and Roseburg couldn’t rally back.

The Sky Sox took a 5-0 lead after scoring four runs in the first and another in the top of the second. Roseburg got on the board in the second thanks to a RBI single by Riley Culberhouse and slowly chipped away at the lead.

The Bottlecaps tied the score 6-6 in the fourth inning on an error and took their first lead in the fifth. Garrett Zeimet finished off a three-run inning with a two-out single that put the ‘Caps up 9-6.

Hillsboro retook the lead 10-9 in the top of the sixth. The advantage was short-lived, as Roseburg tied the game again on an error in the home half of the sixth inning.

The game stayed tied 10-10 into extra innings. The Sky Sox regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the tenth. Roseburg got the first two runners on base in the bottom of the tenth and had the tying run at second, but three straight outs finished off the comeback attempt.

The Bottlecaps fall into the knock-out bracket and will face elimination against Columbia Gorge at 9 a.m. Thursday.
