ROSEBURG – It had been almost two years since Chris Stone had put on one of the memorable sleeveless orange Dr. Stewart’s jerseys, but on Saturday the former Doc’s standout took the mound to lead Roseburg to a 6-2 win over the Perth Heat Colts.
Chris Stone, the oldest brother of current Doc’s player Jonathan Stone, pitched five innings and allowed one unearned run on five hits. He struck out four while walking none. The soon-to-be college junior at George Fox University, took the win for the Doc’s and Jonathan came in late in the game to earn the save.
Roseburg (19-14; 6-4 Area IV) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Jonathan Stone reached on a fielding error and was driven home on a two-out double by Brody Black. The Doc’s made it 2-0 on another error in the third. Garrett Russell stole third base and then took home when the throw from Australian catcher Nick Hurst sailed into left field.
The Dr. Stewart’s led 3-1 after seven innings, despite getting out-hit 9-2. The Colts’ starting pitcher walked five Roseburg batters and hit one to go along with four errors to allow the Doc’s to build the advantage. The Dr. Stewart’s scored three runs off reliever Parker Hancock in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Jonathan Stone gave up a lead-off home run in the top of the ninth to Hayden Michie, but finished off the game with back-to-back strike outs to earn his first save of the season.
