EUGENE – The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s continue to struggle getting wins on the road as the Eugene Challenges swept an Area 4 doubleheader against the Doc’s on Saturday night at Swede Johnson Stadium.

The Challengers outlasted the Doc’s 7-4 in game one of the twin bill and Eugene held off a late rally from Roseburg to win 8-6 in the nightcap. The sweep stretched the Dr. Stewart’s road losing streak to seven games.

Eugene (16-12; 4-4 Area 4) scored runs in the second and third inning of game one to take a 2-0 lead. Both times the Challengers managed to push across the run with two outs.

Roseburg (13-13; 4-4 Area 4) battled back to take a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning. Doubles by Doran Gillespie and Luke Lucido drove in three runs for the Doc’s and Garrett Russell scored on a wild pitch.

The lead was short-lived for the Doc’s. Eugene broke through against Roseburg starter Jace Stoffal in the fifth. The Challengers got three straight hits to lead off the inning and a walk to Peyton Bracy ended Stofall’s time on the mound. The first four batters all reached base and scored giving the Challengers a 6-4 advantage. Eugene tacked on its final run of the fifth on a Doc’s throwing error.

Roseburg got a runner into scoring position in the sixth and seventh, but couldn’t come through against Eugene starter Lucas Jackson. The left-hander tossed a complete game for the win and allowed eight hits. Jackson walked four and struck out two.

The Doc’s came up against another strong pitcher in Dylan Myers in game two. Myers stifled Roseburg’s bats over the first six innings and was closing in on a complete game shutout before the Doc’s rallied to make things interesting.

Eugene scored five runs off Doc’s starter Cody Johnson in the first inning. Johnson settled in after the bumpy start and didn’t allow another run until the fifth.

The Challengers led 8-0 going to the seventh inning and were three outs away from handing the Doc’s their first shutout loss of the season. With their backs against the wall, the Doc’s offense finally started to come alive.

Jett Black and Garrett Russell got on base via a walk and hit by pitch, respectively. Doran Gillespie reached on a single to left field and Black scored the Doc’s first run of the game on a fielding error by Eugene’s left fielder.

Back-to-back errors by first baseman Cole Wilkinson gave the Doc’s three more runs and cut the deficit in half. Jacob Luther drove in a run with a ground out to short and Caden Johnson hit a two-out double to make the score 8-6. Jett Black came up to bat for a second time in the inning and represented the game-tying run, but flew out to center to end the game.

Up next for the Dr. Stewart’s is a nonleague doubleheader at home against the Post 6 Barbers from the Hillsboro area on Sunday. The Doc’s lost two games against the Barbers in Hillsboro almost a week ago. While the Doc’s have had issues winning on the road, the team is on an eight-game winning streak at home.

Sunday’s doubleheader against the Barbers is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Tune in for coverage starting at 5:45 p.m. on CBS Sports Radio 1490 The Score or watch online at 541radio.com.
