ROSEBURG – Sporting wood bats, the Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s slugged their way to 14-hits in a 12-7 win over the Corvallis Gerding Builders Marketmen on Saturday at Legion Field.

Cody Johnson went 4-for-5 to lead the Doc’s offense and Garrett Russell added another three hits. Kyler Leischner was the only other player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-5.

Roseburg (11-9; 2-2 Area 4) fell behind 7-3 after Corvallis scored four runs with two outs off starter Payton Hope in the fourth inning. Hope retired the first two batters, but the inning continued after a comebacker got past the pitcher and was too difficult to make a play on by second baseman Jacob Luther. Corvallis went on to get the next five hitters on base by either a single or a walk.

The Marketmen held on to the four-run lead until the fifth, when the Doc’s countered Corvallis’ big inning with one of their own. Roseburg sent 12 hitters to the plate and scored seven runs to retake the lead for good.

Russell led off the inning with an infield single and drove in a run with his second at bat of the frame when he got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Brody Black, Cody Johnson, and Doran Gillespie also drove in runs in the lengthy inning.

While the Doc’s offense exploded, the bullpen shutdown the Marketmen. Noah Burke took over for Hope in the fifth inning and tossed two innings of shutout ball to earn the win. He allowed just one hit and struck out three. Zack Mandera earned the save by pitching the final three innings. He didn’t give up a hit and struck out six.

The Doc’s continue the season with a non-league doubleheader against the Portland Barbers on Monday. Roseburg will travel to Liberty High School in Hillsboro for the twin bill. Game one starts at 6 p.m. Tune in for coverage starting at 5:45 p.m. on CBS Sports Radio 1490 The Score or watch online at 541radio.com.
