ROSEBURG – The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s bounced back after a pair of “disappointing” losses to Grants Pass on Tuesday by sweeping the Nuggets in another league doubleheader on Wednesday at Legion Field in Roseburg.
The Doc’s played shutdown defense to back up strong pitching and provided the offensive firepower to take down the Nuggets. Roseburg won game one 13-2 in five innings and finished the sweep with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
“It’s huge in Area 4 to even up the series,” coach Scott Shaver said. “[Tuesday] was a little disappointing in some ways and in other ways not. It was a good education for our guys.”
Jace Stoffal started on the mound in game one and tossed four shutout innings before giving up two runs in the fifth, but by that point the game was out of reach for the Nuggets. Stoffal scattered four hits over the five innings, struck out five, and didn’t allow an earned run.
Roseburg’s offense started the scoring early with a run in the first inning off a Luke Lucido double. The Doc’s added two more runs in the second on a double by Jacob Luther and a groundout by Garrett Russell.
The score got out of hand in the third inning when the Doc’s sent 14 hitters to the plate and scored 10 runs. Jonathan Stone started the frame with the first of two doubles he hit in the inning. Lucido followed with a double, Zack Mandera then struck a single, and Cody Johnson kept the hits going with a bases clearing triple. Roseburg got the first six hitters on base and five of them scored.
Despite a double play, the Doc’s managed to keep scoring. They collected three two-out hits and added five more runs. Stone, Lucido, Mandera, and Doran Gillespie all collected multiple hits in the game. Lucido went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Stone, Mandera, and Cody Johnson all drove in two runs as well.
Roseburg’s 13 runs was its most of the season in a single game.
The Doc’s took a 1-0 lead in game two and led wire-to-wire behind strong pitching from Cody Johnson. The Roseburg High School grad pitched all seven innings and allowed just five hits and one run, while striking out four and walking one.
Meanwhile, Roseburg took advantage of five errors by Grants Pass and scored five unearned runs off Nuggets starter Cade Kissel. The Doc’s added a run in the second and three in the third.
With the sweep, the Doc’s finished with a season-series split against Grants Pass. Roseburg moved into a four-way tie for second place in the Area 4 standings. Grants Pass, Eugene, Willamette Valley, and Roseburg are all tied with 2-2 records.
Up next, the Doc’s will travel to Corvallis for a non-league game against the Gerding Builders Marketmen. The nine-inning contest will begin at 6 p.m. Tune in for broadcast coverage online at 541radio.com starting at 5:45 p.m. There will be no radio coverage of the game due to Oregon State baseball playing in the College World Series.
