GRANTS PASS – The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s stumbled out of the gate to begin Area 4 league play on Tuesday night. The Doc’s let an early lead slip away in a 15-8 loss in game one against Grants Pass and couldn’t muster the fire power needed to keep up with the Nuggets in a 9-5 loss in game two.

The Doc’s built a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the opener. Cody Johnson drove in Luke Lucido and Jonathan Stone with a two-out single in the first. Garrett Russell drove in a run with another two-out hit in the second. Roseburg was leading 4-2 after three innings of play, but two big innings propelled the Nuggets to the comeback win.

Grants Pass (12-4; 2-0 Area 4) scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-4 edge. Doc’s starter Payton Hope skirted major issues through the first three innings and allowed just minimal damage, but was touched up for four runs in the fourth before being relieved by Brody Black.  The Nuggets pushed three runs across against Black and led 9-4 after five innings.

Roseburg (8-8; 0-2 Area 4) cut the deficit to three runs in the sixth on a Russell single and a ground out by Lucido, but Grants Pass responded by scoring six more runs to pull away for the victory.

Russell and Cody Johnson both went 3-for-4 in game one and finished with two RBI. Johnson and Kyler Leischner each had doubles in the third inning for Roseburg’s only extra base hits.

Grants Pass had five extra base hits. Nate Morgan went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI. Vinny Zavolta was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI.

The Doc’s fell behind 4-0 in game two, but came back to tie the score with a four-spot in the top of the fourth inning. Cody Johnson came up with a bases loaded single to drive in the first two runs and Jacob Luther drove in a run with a ground out. Johnson scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 4-4.

The momentum was short lived as the Nuggets just continued to pile on runs. Grants Pass scored in every inning of the game but the first to pull off the sweep.

The Doc’s will try to get a bit of redemption against Grants Pass when the two sides meet in Roseburg on Wednesday for another league doubleheader.
