Roseburg Dr. Stewart's vs Eugene Challengers 6-16-18

EUGENE – The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s started out the Grant Smith Wood Bat Tournament in Eugene with a pair of big wins, but finished with a pair of tough losses.

The Doc’s won 11-0 over Siskiyous Post 122 on Friday to begin the tourney and followed up with a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Mavericks in an eight inning contest to begin the day on Saturday.

Roseburg had a five-game winning streak going into Saturday’s nightcap against Eugene, but the Doc’s couldn’t hold a lead and lost 6-2 against the Challengers. Eugene scored three runs in the sixth inning to break open a one-run game and end the Doc’s winning streak.

The Doc’s finished in second place in the Blue Pool and paired up against the Vancouver Cardinals from the Gold Pool for Sunday’s contest.

Roseburg took an early 4-2 lead and held a 5-3 advantage after four innings, but the Cardinals scored seven runs over the final three innings to pull-away for a 10-5 win.

It was the first time the Doc’s have lost back-to-back games all season. Roseburg is now 5-3 on the year.

Up next for the Dr. Stewart’s is another tournament in Salem. The Doc’s will play at least five games over five days starting with game one on Wednesday.

GAME ONE – FRIDAY
Roseburg’s Cody Johnson threw a five-inning two-hitter and the Dr. Stewart’s offense put up plenty of offense in an 11-0 win over Siskiyous (CA) Post 122 in the Grant Smith Wood Bat Tournament. The Doc’s put up 10 runs in the third inning to blow open a scoreless contest. Zach Holland, Caden Johnson, Brody Black, Zack Mandera, and Jett Black all finished with two hits in the game. Cody Johnson allowed just two hits, walked one, and struck out five as he picked up his first win of the year.

GAME TWO – SATURDAY
The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s rallied from a 2-0 deficit against the Vancouver (WA) Mavericks to win 3-2 in extra innings on Saturday morning at Swede Johnson Stadium in Eugene. Roseburg starter Zack Mandera gave up a run in the first and fourth innings to the Mavericks, but held Vancouver scoreless over the final four innings of the game to get the win. Mandera tossed eight innings, allowed seven hits, walked two, and struck out three. The Doc’s tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth. A two-out single by Cade Meisner drove in Brody Black to tie the game. Roseburg won the game on an error in the bottom of the eighth. Luke Lucido led off with a single to left field. Meisner tried to put down a sacrifice bunt to move Lucido into scoring position, but Vancouver pitcher Sam Malychewski misplayed the ball and then threw it away, allowing Lucido to score the winning run from first.

GAME THREE – SATURDAY
The Eugene Challengers snapped a five-game winning streak for the Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s with a 6-2 win in the Grant Smith Wood Bat Tournament at Swede Johnson Stadium in Eugene. The Doc’s took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Luke Lucido and Brody Black. Eugene battled back to tie the game on a two-out single by Payton Bracy. The Challengers took the lead on a sac fly by Griffin Lavassaur in the fourth inning, but the score remained 3-2 until the sixth. A two-out, bases loaded double by Kyle Lund cleared the bases and gave Eugene the comfortable edge.

GAME FOUR – SUNDAY
The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s took a two-run lead twice against the Vancouver (WA) Cardinals, but couldn’t hold the edge in a 10-5 loss to wrap up the Grant Smith Wood Bat Tournament in Eugene. The Doc’s gave up two runs to the Cardinals in the first inning, but took the lead with four runs in the home half of the frame. Zack Mandera started the scoring after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Cody Johnson drove in two with a double to right field. Doran Gillespie capped the scoring with a single to left. Roseburg added another run in the fourth on a single by Jonathan Stone and led 5-3 heading to the fifth. Vancouver’s bat got hot and drove in seven runs over the final three innings to runaway with the victory.
