SPRINGFIELD – The Roseburg boys basketball team ran out of its late game magic in a 63-53 loss to the Thurston Colts on Tuesday night in Springfield.

The Indians trailed by as many as 19 points in the second quarter, but once again found a way to rally back in the fourth. A 10-0 run to start the final period got the Tribe back to within five, but that’s as close as they could manage to get as the team suffered its first defeat of the year.

Thurston led wire-to-wire, building a 12-point lead in the first quarter. But just before the quarter came to an end, Roseburg’s Collin Warmouth hit a half court buzzer-beater to get the Indians back within nine.

The momentum didn’t last for the Tribe. The Colts went on a 13-3 run to begin the second quarter to stretch the lead to 33-14. Roseburg managed to score the final six points of the quarter to get back within 13.

The Indians trailed by 15 to start the final period, but the Colts went cold and didn’t score for over four minutes. That allowed Roseburg to get back within five. Thurston stretched the lead back out, but Roseburg rallied again to make it a 58-53 score with 59.7 seconds remaining. The Indians were hoping for another magical comeback in the final seconds of the game like their double-overtime victory against Century last Friday, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Juniors Collin Warmouth and Jonathan Stone each had career scoring nights for Roseburg. Warmouth put in a game-high 27 points, while Stone finished with 15. No other Roseburg player finished with more than three points. Thurston had three players finish in double figures, led by Isaac Lange with 24.

Up next, the Roseburg boys will be back at home for a showdown with the Corvallis Spartans on Friday. The game tips off at 6:45 p.m. Coverage will begin at 6:30 p.m. on 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com.
