ROSEBURG – The high school sports winter season begins next week and with that a possibly historic Roseburg wrestling season will get underway.

While the Indians will most likely make a number of headlines on the mats this year, two senior wrestlers are making big news before the season even begins. On Wednesday, Layne Van Anrooy and Haydn Maley will officially make their college commitments for nationally prominent programs.

Both seniors have selected NCAA Division I schools as the place they plan to continue their wrestling careers. Van Anrooy committed to the University of Michigan back in September, while Maley committed to Stanford at the end of October. The duo will make their choices official during a ceremony at Roseburg High School Wednesday night.

The University of Michigan has a historic wrestling program that has won 11 conference titles and has produced 21 NCAA national champions. Stanford University had placed in the top 20 nationally three times since 2010 and was runner-up in the Pac-12 Conference in 2014.

Obviously, their recruitment by major college wrestling programs proves that Van Anrooy and Maley are special talents, but the pair has a chance to do something no wrestler in school history has ever done. They both can become four-time individual state champions with wins at the state tournament in February.

With historic seasons on the line, both Van Anrooy and Maley will start out the year on a positive note. Fans can come out and support the two wrestlers by gathering at the Roseburg High gym at 5:45 p.m. for the college commitment ceremony.
