GRANTS PASS – The Roseburg volleyball team got out to a sluggish start against Grants Pass on Thursday and, despite their best efforts, the Indians dropped their first match in Southwest Conference play.
Grants Pass took the opening set 25-16 as the Indians once again struggled to come out firing. Roseburg battled back and the two sides traded sets back-and-forth until the match went to a fifth and final set. The final set came down to the wire, but the Lady Cavers outlasted the Indians 15-13 to take the match 3-2.
The loss cuts Roseburg’s lead for the conference crown down to just one-game over Grants Pass. South Eugene was idle on Thursday and remains just 1.5 games out of first place. Roseburg will have no margin for error over its final three games in conference play.
Up next, the Indians will visit Central Oregon for the Bend Clearwater Tournament on Saturday. Following that the Indians host South Medford on Tuesday.
The Douglas Trojans downed South Umpqua 3-1 to win the Douglas County rivalry game. The win keeps the Trojans in the hunt for a league title. Douglas is actually the highest ranked team in the Far West, based on the OSAA power rankings, but the Trojans trail first place Siuslaw by one game.
The Sutherlin volleyball team fell into a 3-way tie for second place after losing 3-0 against first place Sisters on Thursday. Harlee Baker had nine kills and three digs for Suthelrin. Hannah Harwood pitched in 12 assists and Caithlynn Carrillo had 10 digs.
