Prep Sports: Girls flag football officially adopted as a sanctioned activity
WILSONVILLE — A new sanctioned sport is coming to high school athletics this spring.
Girls flag football was adopted as a sanctioned sport by the Delegate Assembly of the Oregon School Activities Association during their meeting on Monday. The vote passed unanimously.
Oregon becomes the 25th state to sanction girls flag football as an activity, according to a release from the OSAA. The sport spent two seasons as an “emerging activity” prior to its formal adoption.
The OSAA said 57 varsity teams competed in the sport last spring with a participation total above 1,400 student-athletes.
There haven’t been any schools in Douglas County to start a girls flag football program, as of yet. Roseburg High School athletic director Adam Blue said there are a number of schools in the Southern Oregon region that had programs last school year, including South Medford, Grants Pass, North Medford, Eagle Point, and Coquille.
