Legion Baseball: Docs sweep nonleague twin bill against Hillsdale Merchants

The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s swept a nonleague matchup against the Hillsdale Merchants on Saturday at Champion Car Wash Field.

The Docs won 12-4 and 8-2. Roseburg (16-10) won all three of its matchups against Hillsdale (28-9) during the regular season.

One big inning helped separate the Docs from the Merchants in each contest.

The Stewies jumped out to an 11-1 lead with eight runs in the bottom of the second inning in the opener. Roseburg broke a 2-2 tie with six runs in the sixth inning of the nightcap.

Christian Korba, Teagan Sprague and Danner Wertz helped lead the Docs offense. In the two games combined, Korba was 3-for-6 with two doubles and 5 RBIs, Sprague was 4-for-6 with a triple and 3 RBIs and Wertz was 4-for-8 with a double and an RBI.

The Docs leaned on a couple of college arms to help eat up innings on the mound.

Bayden Morris, a freshman with the Umpqua Riverhawks club last spring, pitched three innings to start Game 1. He allowed four runs on four hits with two walks, one strikeout and one hit batter.

Logan Shipman took over in the fourth inning and earned the victory with four shutout innings. He allowed just one hit with four walks and three strikeouts.

Ty Hellenthal, another member of the Umpqua Riverhawks baseball team, started Game 2 and went five innings. He was touched up for two runs on three hits and tallied seven strikeouts and just one walk.

Hellenthal exited with the game tied 2-2. Logan Schwerdt earned the win with two innings in relief. He allowed just one hit and no runs with one walk and one strikeout.

The Docs will face the Central Oregon Generals in an Area 4 doubleheader at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Redmond.
