Legion Baseball: Docs dominate two-game series with Alaska’s Wasilla Road Warriors

The Wasilla Road Warriors might have been a bit road-weary as the American Legion team from Alaska wrapped up a weeklong road trip through Oregon with a pair of losses against the Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s earlier this week.

The Docs controlled the two-game series from start to finish. Roseburg (13-9) won 16-0 on Monday and 16-5 on Tuesday at Champion Car Wash Field.

Wasilla (7-11-1) will return to Alaska Thursday to finish out its Legion season.

Danner Wertz sparked the Docs’ offense in Monday’s victory. The rising-junior at Roseburg High School was 4-for-4 with four RBIs. He also walked and scored a run.

The Docs had 16 hits in the contest. Braxton Gary and Regan Soper added two hits each. Soper had a pair of RBIs and Teagan Sprague drove in three runs despite going 0-for-2.

Wasilla managed just three hits against a trio of Docs pitchers. Ty Hellenthal got the start and tossed 4 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Quinn Gaylor and Logan Anderson each allowed one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings. Gaylor earned the win in relief.

The Docs had to comeback from an early 3-0 deficit in Tuesday’s contest.

The Road Warriors took advantage of first-inning opportunities against Docs starter Logan Shipman. A bases-loaded walk for Ramon Guzman plated the first run. Camden Mette later drove in a run with a bunt single and Robby Guzman tacked on a run with a fielder’s choice.

Roseburg rallied quickly and tied the score in the home half of the first. The Docs took a 5-3 lead in the second inning and blew the game open with nine runs in the third.

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the fourth, but the scheduled seven-inning game ended early after just five innings.

The Docs had just seven hits, but took advantage of eight walks, four hit batters and five errors by the Road Warriors. Quinn Gaylor and Paxton Burke led the offense with two hits each. Gaylor reached base three times and scored twice.

Anderson and Hayden Thompson both had two-run doubles in the nine-run third inning.

Up next, the Docs will finish off a stretch of 10 games over eight days with an Area 4 doubleheader against the Medford Mustangs on Wednesday. The twin bill starts at 5 p.m. at Champion Car Wash Field.
