Prep Baseball: Roseburg secures a 10-7 nonleague win over Sprague
KEIZER — Despite blustery, cold and wet conditions, the Roseburg Indians managed to overcome the Sprague Olympians 10-7 in a nonleague game Tuesday night at Roto Rooter Park at Volcanoes Stadium.
The victory stretched Roseburg’s winning streak to seven games and concluded the nonleague portion of the schedule for the Indians.
Roseburg (10-3) returns to Southwest Conference play on Tuesday at Sheldon.
The elements obviously impacted play between the Indians and Olympians. Wind gusts were consistently blowing out to left field and made conditions difficult for the defenses.
The wind may have helped Paxton Burke, who led off the game with a triple to the left-center field alley. He scored on a groundout by Mason Young to give Roseburg a 1-0 advantage. A two-out double by AJ Black added another run.
The Indians finished with four extra base hits in the game. Freshman Christian Korba drove a ball to the fence for a two-run double in the fifth inning that put Roseburg back in front 7-5.
Sophomore Greyson Coate helped tack on some insurance runs in the sixth inning with a lead off double. Coate later scored on a single by Brady Popken.
Sprague (6-5) overcame Roseburg’s early advantage and tied the game 2-2 on a two-out single by Camden Buchheit in the second inning.
The Indians retook a 4-2 lead in the third inning, but the Olympians responded quickly and put up three runs in the home half of the third for a 5-2 advantage. A two-out triple by Jaxson Redel plated two runs to tie the game and Redel later scored on a throwing error.
Roseburg starter Danner Wertz managed to settle back in and held Sprague scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, allowing the Indians a chance to comeback. Wertz earned the win after allowing five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks over five innings.
Burke closed out the game for the Indians and earned his first save of the season.
Coate, Popken and Burke all had two hits for the Indians. Black and Korba led the way with two RBIs each. Fletcher Coleman drew four walks in four plate appearances and scored three times.
Redel led the Sprague offense by going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Buchheit and Mason Splonski both had two hits has well. Paul Herb drew three walks in his first three plate appearances.
