UCC Sports: Women’s soccer downs Lane 1-0, volleyball falls to Rogue

SUTHERLIN — The Umpqua women’s soccer scored a 1-0 win over the Lane Titans on Wednesday to stay in second place in the South Region standings.

Ginne Saavedra scored in the 66th minute for the lone goal of the match. Siulose Jones assisted on what proved to be the game-winner.

Umpqua (8-2-1, 6-1-1 South Region) had six shots on goal, while UCC goalkeeper Kayden Twichell only had to make three saves in net thanks to a strong defensive effort.

Umpqua has a 3-point lead on the Titans for second place in the South Region standings with four league matches left to play. The Riverhawks face Southwestern Oregon at 1 p.m.  on Saturday at Sutherlin High School.

Volleyball

The Umpqua volleyball team played close with Rogue Community College in a South Region match Wednesday, but came up short in a straight set loss.

The set scores were 25-23, 25-19, 25-16.

Kennedy Baylis Hines led the Riverhawks with 13 kills.

Umpqua (4-12, 2-5 South Region) will host Southwestern Oregon at 6 p.m. on Friday.
