Legion Baseball: Hellenthal, Docs shutout Corvallis 3-0 at Coach K Classic

Hellenthal

EAGLE POINT — Umpqua Valley Christian graduate Ty Hellenthal allowed no earned runs across 7 innings for the second time in six days as the Roseburg Dr. Stewarts squeaked past the Corvallis Marketmen 3-0 in a low-scoring, high-hit affair Thursday afternoon at Eagle Point High School. With the win, the Docs head home with a 1-0 record after the first day of the four-day Coach K Memorial Tournament.

Despite Corvallis (5-8) racking up nine hits across seven innings, Hellenthal worked through traffic and left the bases loaded twice as the future Umpqua Community College Riverhawk struck out three and walked just one while working with weak contact.

“All the pitches felt good. Fastball, curveball, and change-up. Had them all today and I am thankful for that,” Hellenthal said. “Defense did a good job behind me, we got a few runs and that’s a good way to win a game.”

Ahead of a stretch of 11 games across seven days, head coach Tim Sustaire described the Docs as “scrappy” and the Stewies certainly lived up to the description against Corvallis. Roseburg peppered seven hits across 6 innings and capitalized on the few opportunities they had by manufacturing three runs — one in the third, fifth and sixth — on an RBI single, an error and a sacrifice fly.

Paxton Burke was involved in all three runs, scoring twice and driving in the third and final run in the sixth inning on the sac fly. Daniel Withers picked up an RBI in a 1-for-3 day at the plate with a bases-loaded single in the third inning. Dane St. Clair had a pair of singles to finish 2-for-3 and Danner Wertz had the only extra base hit in the game — a double in the fourth.

Roseburg now prepares for its second doubleheader in three days as Dr. Stewart’s are set to face off against Southern Oregon Baseball and the Reno Knights at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Friday from Eagle Point. With four games to go in the Coach K Classic, Hellenthal seems optimistic about the Docs chances the rest of the weekend.

“It’s great for the team to start out with a win,” Hellenthal said. “We know now going forward in the tournament, we have a good shot to win it, so we just got to keep pushing and hopefully our pitchers keep pounding the zone and get wins.”

All games during the weekend can be heard on The Score 92.3 FM and 1490 AM. A live video simulcast is available at 541radio.com.
