CLACKAMAS — The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s finally got over the hump.

After starting the season with six consecutive losses, the Docs were able to put all the pieces together for a pair of wins to start out play in the Clackamas Tournament Friday and Saturday at Clackamas High School.

The Stewies outlasted the host team, Clackamas, for a 2-1 win in eight innings on Friday afternoon and then pounded the Beaverton Sockeyes for a 15-2 win in five innings on Saturday.

Roseburg (2-6) faces the Rose City Baseball Club to finish the tournament on Sunday at 9 a.m.

Ty Hellenthal made his pitching debut for the Docs in Friday’s win over Clackamas (5-7-1). He went seven innings and allowed one run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a two-out rally. Caleb Tiede reached on fielder’s choice and scored after back-to-back singles by Justin Larsen and Ben Foglio.

Roseburg knotted the score up in the next half inning. Logan Anderson hit a double to the right field corner and advanced to third when the throw to the infield got away. Jake Johnson drove Anderson in with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Neither team managed to break the tie in the seventh and the contest went to extra innings. The Docs batted first as the visiting team and went on a two-out rally against Clackamas starter Hudson Normand.

Anderson started the run with a single to right field. Johnson followed with a single up the middle and Cal Robbins plated the go-ahead run with a single past second base.

Camden Hartsell relieved Hellenthal in the eighth inning and faced some trouble after hitting the first batter and walking the second. A pop-out on a sacrifice bunt attempt and a strikeout got the Docs within an out of clinching their first win, but a walk loaded the bases for the Cavs.

Hartsell managed to lock in and struck out CJ Limbo to secure the win and end a six-game losing skid.

Anderson and Dane St. Clair led the Docs offense with a pair of hits each. St. Clair had two doubles in his three at bats.

Saturday’s contest featured plenty more hitting and five extra base hits on the way to a 10-run mercy rule victory over Beaverton (2-6).

Anderson was 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Robbins was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBIs and Daniel Withers added three hits with two doubles and three RBIs.

Tauj Flora and Ryan Shaver also had multiple hits. Shaver and Danner Wertz also drove in a pair of runs each.

The Docs had 16 hits total against Beaverton starter Jackson Cobb. Roseburg scored six runs in the first inning and tacked on another in the second. Cobb surrendered eight more runs in the fourth inning.

Jake Sproul pitched all five innings for the Docs and allowed just two runs on two hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.

Weather conditions for the tournament have been suboptimal as rain and wind have been persistent throughout each contest.
