American Legion Baseball: Docs drop season opener 8-2 at Medford

MEDFORD — With baseball state playoffs, graduations and school filling the schedule, the Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s American Legion baseball team didn’t get a lot of time to prepare for its season opener against the Medford Mustangs on Monday at Harry and David Field.

The Docs saw 15-of-18 players get some playing time in the nonleague matchup, which fell in favor of the Mustangs 8-2.

“We have not had a practice with everybody. We’re about to do it right now,” Docs head coach Tim Sustaire said prior to the first pitch.

Jake Johnson, Camden Hartsell, Drew Camp, Danner Wertz and Rylee Cheney all pitched for Roseburg. None of them went more than two innings.

Medford (1-0) scored on a two-out double by Keegan Painter in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead against Johnson.

Roseburg (0-1) battled back with two runs in the top of the third inning. Logan Anderson had a two-out triple to get into scoring position and crossed home on a double by Cal Robbins. Daniel Withers capped the scoring with an RBI single that put the Docs ahead 2-1.

Hartsell took over in the third and was touched up for three runs, although two were unearned after a fielding error at third.

Camp and Wertz combined to hold Medford scoreless from the fourth inning through the seventh, but the Mustangs added four insurance runs in the eighth inning against Cheney.

Robbins was 4-for-5 to lead Roseburg’s offense. A couple of newcomers made an early impact as well. Fletcher Coleman was 2-for-3 and Ryan Shaver was 1-for-1 in their debuts with the Docs.

Medford took advantage of eight walks and a hit batter. Easton Curtis, Sean McFall and Painter all had two hits for the Mustangs.

Roseburg will host the Salem WellCare Dodgers for the home opener at 7 p.m. Thursday at Champion Car Wash Field.
