Roseburg’s Williams wins 3-hole playoff to secure bid to 6A state golf

LEBANON — Roseburg senior Zach Williams made a birdie on the third and final playoff hole at a regional qualifying tournament on Monday to secure his spot in the Class 6A boys golf state championships.
Williams was tied with two other golfers at 8-over par (80) after finishing 18-holes at Mallard Creek Golf Course and the trio went to a playoff to decide the final at-large qualifiers for the state tournament. The senior made par on the first two holes, but finished with his second birdie of the day to advance.
A double-bogey on the par-5 No. 6 hole at Mallard Creek began a tough five-hole stretch for Williams. He had bogeys on holes seven and nine and started the back nine with another double-bogey on No. 10.
The senior rebounded with a birdie on hole 11 to get a stroke back and finished the round with a par on five of the final seven holes.
Williams will compete in the boys state championship tournament Monday and Tuesday at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn.
