UVC’s Hellenthal, North Douglas coach Davis earn top all-state honors

A standout baseball season has led to a number of All-State awards for local small school athletes in Douglas County.
After helping lead the Umpqua Valley Christian Monarchs to the Class 2A/1A state championship, senior Ty Hellenthal was selected as the 2A/1A Player of the Year. Hellenthal hit .424 with 30 RBI’s and 42 runs and ended the year with a 10-1 record on the mound with a .82 ERA.
The Monarchs had five players, including Hellenthal, earn first team all-state honors; seniors Sean Simonson (pitcher), Kevin Shaver (catcher) and Tyler Haynes (outfield), and junior Logan Anderson (infield).
Reedsport seniors Kenny Gould (outfield) and Cody Shuttpelz (designated hitter) also earned first team honors.
North Douglas/Elkton coach Jeff Davis was chosen as the 2A/1A Coach of the Year after leading the Warriors on a surprising run all the way to the semifinals of the state playoffs.
